A lot of people skip this step. They seed right into whatever's left after construction - compacted subsoil, rocks, debris - and then wonder why nothing grows. The truth is, what's underneath matters just as much as what you plant on top.

Here's what we were working with: a freshly cleared property that needed a solid base before any grass seed or sod ever touched the ground. We brought in fresh topsoil and spread it across the yard, grading it smooth so water drains properly and roots actually have somewhere to go. That kind of prep work is what separates a lawn that thrives from one that struggles all season.

This is the part of dirt work that doesn't always get talked about. It's not glamorous. But spreading and grading topsoil correctly - making sure the grade slopes right, the depth is consistent, and the surface is ready to receive seed - is a skill. Rush it or skip it, and you'll be fighting that lawn for years.

We do this kind of work on everything from new home builds to older properties that just need a reset. Whether the yard was torn up during construction or just never really got established right to begin with, getting good topsoil down is almost always the first move. Everything else builds from there.

If your yard is more dirt and wishful thinking than actual grass, it might just need a proper foundation to get started. Good groundwork makes growing a whole lot easier.
